After Bandra Worly sea link which is 5.6 kms long, Pamban bridge (Official name- Annai Indira Gandhi Bridge) is second longest bridge in india. It is 3 kms long which connects the island of Rameshwaram Dhanuskodi to the mainland. This is the longest bridge in India and illustrates the marvel of the engineers. The central part can lift vertically to allow large ships to pass through. The rail line has been recently upgraded too. The deity here constitutes one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India. Thousands of Hindu pilgrims on pilgrimage to the holy Hindu shrine of Rameswaram cross the bridge every day.
The bridge was contructed over a 100 years ago and still in a stunning condition. The bridge construction was started in 1887 and completed sometimes in 1912 (Exactly 100 years ago). At that time the bridge started with meter gauge train line (Chhoti line) but it was upgraded to broad gauge recently in 2007.
